A Modern Man Social Experiment – Holiday Snacks

The modern world is obsessed with weight. Their own. That of others. As a ‘husky’ child who grew up into a ‘chubby’ adult – trust me, it’s always on my mind, too.

So, what’s more popular than Netflix, Google and Starbucks combined? DIETS!

Everyone is on one. Fasts. Juice Diets. Organic. Keto. No Carb. Gluten Free. Sugar Free. Vegetarian. Vegan. Whole 30. On and on and on and on.

Yet, there’s one magical time in the year where we all let that noise relax a little – the holidays! We just made it through the food rush of Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. The final blowout will be The Superbowl and Valentine’s Day.

We all know we sneak that extra Christmas cookie, mini Halloween candy bar or pig in a blanket on New Years Eve. But, how much do we let it go?

Recently I bought a couple boxes of Dunkin (don’t call us Dunkin Donuts anymore) munchkin donuts. Without any pomp or circumstance, I put them out on a filing cabinet by the printer and then another location.

Here’s the box as soon as I put it down. The day went by. The amazing people I work with (hi gang!) came and got their print outs or made their copies. Without even thinking about it, they’d reach into the box and pop a gluten-full treat. I sat and enjoyed how happy it made them. I felt like the copy guy from SNL.

The experiment was a success. Here’s the photo at the end of the day…

We’re happy when we eat fun food. So, why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we keep robbing ourselves of these tasty treats we want?

Yes, I know – it’s the healthy thing to do. I’ve talked about that before. But, you know what? In my opinion, we take it to the extremes. We cut some things completely out of our diet.

All carbs – BANISHED!!

All sugars – BANISHED!

All meats – BANISHED!

How about we learn a little thing called moderation?

Instead of the whole bag of chips, pour a small bowl. Ordering a pizza? Have two slices and not the whole thing. Take ONE scoop of mashed potatoes instead of filling half your plate.

Use smaller plates. Fill up on greens. Try cauliflower rice instead of the real thing.

We can get healthier and not cheat ourselves of our favorite foods. Can’t we?
